Classic green tea, also known as Sencha, is the most popular tea in Japan, with 40% of green tea production coming from Shizuoka. This deep-steamed Sencha has a savory, rich flavor with a natural sweetness. Deep-steamed Sencha, also known as Shizuoka's unique green tea, is steamed longer than usual, resulting in a rich, vibrant green tea drink.
Medium Caffeine
Grown entirely in the sun, Sencha comes in a variety of flavors and qualities, but generally has a delicate, fresh flavor with an herbal aroma. Harvested at the peak of ripeness, it is steamed, rolled, and dried immediately after harvesting. Sencha green tea is great for a quick pick-me-up, or to enjoy with Asian food, after a meal, or with a sweet treat.
Tea-infused Sencha
Chazuke is a quick comfort food where rice and savory ingredients are steeped with broth or green tea. Some common ingredients are umeboshi, salted salmon, salmon roe, sesame seeds, and seaweed. Sencha is the typical tea used for this delicious dish. To prepare, place the rice in a bowl, top with your favorite toppings, and pour in the prepared sencha.
Step 1
Boil fresh water and pour into a dispenser or cup to adjust the water temperature. The recommended water temperature for sencha is 176°F (176.0 °F).
(Tip: Simply pouring hot water into a small teacup will lower its temperature by 50.0°F.
Step 2
Add one teaspoon of sencha to a teapot/kyusu to brew 8 ounces (1 cup) of tea.
Step 3
Pour water into the teapot/kyusu and steep for 1-1.5 minutes. Enjoy.
*Sencha is a delicate tea. Brewing at a low temperature avoids bitterness and enhances sweetness. Experiment with different times and temperatures to find your preference.
